USA Triathlon - Rocky Mountain Region Newsletter vol. 1 - March, 2002
Welcome to the first ever Rocky Mountain Region USA Triathlon e- newsletter. We are anticipating an exciting season with something for everyone, all the way from shorter sprint distances such as the Milkman in New Mexico to the full Ironman race in Utah. Want to do a series? There is the Colorado Triathlon Series along the Front Range. Are you in a club? We are hosting the national club championship at the Boulder Peak, and the regional club championship is at Las Vegas, New Mexico. Like to go off-road? There are great races in Yuba, Keystone and Ridgeway. If you like to swim in warm water, Glenwood Springs is now sanctioning with us so your results count towards your national ranking. For more details on these and all the other fine USAT sanctioned races, please check out our website at www.usat-rockymountain.org . Along with the calendar, you can check out rankings, a listing of clubs and the latest regional information. Let us know what you think. Larry Seidman President - USAT Rocky Mountain Region

USAT Annual Membership: All races entered during the year in the region count towards not only your national ranking but your regional ranking (3 races minimum required for either ranking). Any sanctioned USAT race (check the website calendar by clicking on the URL at right: www.usat-rockymountain.org ) qualifies you for the National Age Group Championship. Just finish in the top 3, or 25% (33% if a regional championship) of your age group, and you're in. It's that easy. It pays to carry the USAT annual membership card! Plus, you no longer have to pay those $7 USAT single race fees. The first 25,000 members each year get two free bike travel vouchers on United Airlines which is a $150 savings. You also get a $25 merchandise certificate from the Sports Basement (with free USPS shipping). You help the USAT national team, get 6 issues of USA Triathlon magazine and are covered with excess sports accident medical insurance while participating in USAT - sanctioned races. You can sign up at www.USATriathlon.org
News from around the region:
Wyoming: Warren Lemerick a top ranked Wyoming age group triathlete has been appointed to the USAT Rocky Mountain regional board. Warren was elected in February and will serve a two year term.
Utah: Ironman Utah is coming on June 8th. This will be the western most mainland Ironman USA race this year. Preparations have been underway for a year now to present a truly fantastic course. Officials started training at the Jordenelle race last year in Park City. The bike course will be stunning. Several other races are planning on sanctioning with USAT this year so again results will count towards national rankings and qualification spots at the National Age Group Championships. Utah has a wonderful state email newsgroup. To join it, send a message to update@triutah.com.
New Mexico: Missed the regional Olympic distance race in Las Vegas, New Mexico last year? You missed something special. This wonderful location has simply stunning scenery, wonderful State Patrol support and a town that supports the race whole heartedly. The Las Vegas, NM race will once again be the site of the regional Olympic distance championships. Get your entry in early as the race is expected to fill.
Colorado: From the new Parker Fall Frenzy race to Glenwood Springs sanctioning, there are more sanctioned races in the region than ever before that count for rankings.
Coming Next Issue: * Member Profile * Rules - It's not just drafting anymore. Being `overtaken' and not dropping out of the draft zone is where many penalties are occurring. Learn how to avoid this common penalty. Plus, have you checked your bar end plugs lately? Don't wait for a race to learn you are being DQ'd for unsafe equipment. Plus a quick cheat sheet of the most common infractions the officials look for. * Meet the board * Volunteer - You should volunteer at least once for every 5 races you do. Now be honest. How long has it been since you've stood on the side, handed out water and cheered on those racing?
Club News: There is a section on the web site for our region with contact information on all the USAT sanctioned clubs. Take a look and join a club in your area to make training that much more beneficial and fun. There is nothing like a masters swim coach and workout session to help you bring down those swim times.
