I. Introductions
II. Appointment of the Regional International Distance Championships
Bids received from:
A. Vernal Dinosaur Triathlon, Vernal, Utah
B. Las Vegas Tiathlon, Las Vegas, New Mexico
Discussion included points that Las Vegas has not had officials at their event up to this point, but will be doing an officials training workshop during the event next year in order to qualify as a regional championship (based on Rule #19 in the USAT rules and regulations for sanctioning*).
*Bid package states that the year prior must have had officials attending the event in order to qualify as a Regional Championship.
Vernal, Utah did have officials on prior years. They have qualified four times prior to canceling their event last year, which was due to problems with the water. This year they have an increase in snow pack already with another reservoir as a back up. Historically, the number of participants is around 120.
Comment made that based on the bid package rules, Vernal is the only one that follows requirements. It is harder to get to from New Mexico, but easier from Colorado and Wyoming. Las Vegas could try again next year after having their officials clinic.
Date conflict brought up that Boulder Peak and Vernal are on the same weekend this next year, August 12th. Is it possible to have Boulder Peak as the championship event?
Boulder Peak did not submit a bid and will most likely not go for sanctioning because of the increase in the race day fee of $5 to $7. Perhaps Vernal could move their event to another date to avoid the conflict for race participants. August 4th does not conflict with anything else. If date can not be changed, the deciding vote will go to Las Vegas for the Regional Championships. All agree.
III. Event date changes
A. Cheyenne Mountain Triathlon
&nb sp; Original date was June 17, 2001 - WILL NOW BE: June 24, 2001
The run will be on the golf course, which will be safer for the participants.
B. Razor City Triathlon
WILL BE: July 29, 2001
Water temperature will be more appropriate.
Note: Razor City is the same weekend as the Las Vegas, NM race.
Larry to put together a race calendar with sanctioned races designated by bold print.
IV. Discussion on the proposed rate increase for daily participation of non-USAT members from $5 to $7
A. National USAT Board meeting on the subject on the same day.
B. Consensus is that the increase is not coming from a valid basis, but decision is in the hands of the National Board.
V. Regional Newsletter
Discussion on creating a newsletter that would be available over the internet. Larry to explore.
